A Mother Called (Ada Meyer Barten)
Manning Monitor, October 26, 1916

Mrs. John Barten (nee Meyer) was born April 5, 1876 near the city of Chicago. When a child about a year old her parents moved to Iowa, settling in Carroll County a short distance east of Templeton. Here she grew to womanhood and when reaching mature years was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township. She was married to Mr. John Barten, March 6, 1901, to which union were born 4 children; Richard aged 14 years, Walter aged 11 years, Johnnie aged 7 years, and one whose eyes never opened to this world but passed into eternity with the mother. The deceased seemed in good health until a few weeks prior to her death, when it became necessary to have a surgical operation, for which she went to an Omaha hospital last Saturday. The operation was performed in the morning, but she failed to rally from the operation and passed away Saturday evening, aged 40 years, 6 months, and 20 days.

She leaves to mourn her early demise, a husband, three children, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. August Meyer, who now reside in Manning, four sisters, Mrs. Jacob Bald of Lincoln Township, Mrs. Fred Ross of Manning, Mary and Louisa who still remain at home, one brother, Ernest Meyer who resides in Omaha.

Funeral services took place at the Presbyterian Church Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m., Rev. Krumm officiating, assisted by Rev. Aller. Following the funeral service kind hands took the remains to the Manning cemetery where burial took place.

The loss to the Barten home is irreparable. She was a true and loving wife and mother, and her death leaves a great vacancy in the home. She gave her life that another might live, the noblest deed yet recorded.

The sorrowing family can feel that they have the deep sympathy of all in their trying hour of sorrow.
