Obituary of Adolph Grundmeier

Following is the obituary of Adolph Grundmeier, former Manning resident whose death we reported recently.

Adolph Grundmeier, a resident of Northern Minnesota for more than 24 years, was laid to rest in the Lake View Cemetery at Black Duck, Minn., Friday afternoon, August 25, following funeral services in Hines at 2 p.m.

Mr. Grundmeier passed away early Tuesday morning in his sleep, in his home at Rest Haven Resort. He was born May 23, 1858 near Lost Nation, Iowa, and died Aug. 22, 1939, at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 29 days.

In the year 1877 he moved with his parents to Dodge City, Kans., and returned to Carroll County, IA. in 1880. He and his brother Otto made the trip in a covered wagon. Both contracted typhoid fever on arriving home and Otto became worse and passed away.

Adolph Grundmeier was married to Louise Hinze of Arcadia on March 24, 1884. She passed away in 1897. To this union five sons were born. In the year 1899 he married Lillie Swearingen Norris of Manning, Ia., and to this union was born a daughter and two sons. He lived on a farm near Manning until 1915 when he moved his family to Blackduck, Minn. While in good health he was active in local affairs, served on the town board 18 years and as clerk of the school board 21 years.

His first thoughts were of his neighbors and friends in time of sickness and sorrow. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, seven sons, Charley of Kelliher, Adolph Jr. of Saum, Frank of Gemmel, Herbert and Walter of Hines, Martin of Blackduck, all of Minnesota; one daughter, Mrs. James Meade of Iron, Minn.; one stepson, Ned A. Norris of Sand Point, Idaho; one step daughter, Mrs. August Mergele of Taconite, Minn.

The many floral contributions showed how well he was respected and loved by relatives and friends. There were 73 immediate relatives present at the funeral.

Relatives from this vicinity who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Emil Grundmeier and daughter Dorothy, Ewald Grundmeier, brothers, of Arcadia, Ia.; Two sisters, Mrs. Louise Schroeder of Wall Lake, Mrs. Homer Auspack of Council Bluffs, Ia.; brother-in-law, C.T. Hinze, Carroll, Ia.; T.A. Swearingen of Spirit Lake; E.E. Swearingen, Havre Mt.; sisters-in-law, Mrs. D.S. Wilson, Marshalltown, Ia.; Mrs. Tianitha Scheiber, Lake Barton, and several nephews and nieces.

Robert Grundmeier recalls that at the end of Adolph's life, he had retained all of his teeth except one, and that one he had pulled himself. He never found it necessary to visit a doctor until shortly before his death. Also that he may have served in the military from 1881 to 1898. Adolph established a resort named "Rest Haven" on the North shore of Blackduck Lake in Hines Township, Beltrami County, Minnesota. Rest Haven resort had a compliment of seven cabins, and included a farm of 93 acres. I recall one family visit to the resort. I was just a small boy but I remember the beauty of the lake and trees. On the property was a small corncrib. It was very small compared to Iowa standards, but big enough to suit production of Northern Minnesota. It seemed to my young eyes to be not much bigger than our two-holed outhouse!
