Alan Dean, son of Melvin and Marjorie (Kuhn) Kusel, was born September 26, 1943, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He grew up in Manning where he lived with his family on a farm north of town. Alan attended Manning Schools and graduated with the Class of 1961. After high school he farmed with his father and did custom windrowing and combining; he drove truck and was a school bus driver.

On September 10, 1967, Alan was united in marriage with Pam Kusel at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Two daughters were born to this union. The family made their home in Manning where Alan started his career in law enforcement in 1972. While serving on the Manning police force, Alan attended the Iowa Police Academy and took classes in Criminal Law. He was named Chief of Police in 1988. After serving the community for 30 years, he retired in 2002. During his retirement he served on the Manning Housing Agency Board and enjoyed driving truck for Plastico, and assisting his wife with the newspaper.

Alan was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed working with wood and gardening. Above all, Alan loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He excitedly anticipated the arrival of his third grandchild to be born soon. Alan was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Alan was diagnosed with cancer in September 2006. With a positive attitude, he lived each day to the fullest and appreciated all of his blessings. As his health failed he was cared for at home by his loving family and died there early Sunday, August 5, 2007, at the age of 63 years, 8 months and 10 days.

He was preceded in death by his father Melvin Kusel and grandparents Ernest and Wilhelmina Kuhn and August and Ida Kusel.

He is survived by his wife Pam of Manning; two daughters Amy and husband Brad Benton of Manning and Beth and husband Brad Vitiritto of Des Moines; two grandchildren Miranda Jo Benton and Jarrett James Vitiritto, mother Marge Kusel of Manning; sister Karla Richmond of Colorado; nephew Rick Kusel of Colorado; as well as aunts, uncles, other relatives and many friends.
