Alta Mae, daughter of Leonard Ray and Elsie Helen (Bosche) Vrooman was born October 23, 1927, near Manilla in Nishnabotna Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She was baptized at and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manilla. After graduating from Manilla High School in 1945 she remained at home on the farm and helped her parents.

On February 19, 1961, Alta Mae was united in marriage with Alfred Frederick Dammann at the First Presbyterian Church where she was a member. After her marriage she was confirmed on May 2, 1965, into the Lutheran Faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township south of Manning. She and Alfred lived on their farm south of Manning until retiring and moving into town in 1976. Alta Mae and Alfred transferred their memberships to Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.

After the death of her husband in 1997, Alta Mae remained in their home in Manning until her health started to fail in 2003. At that time she moved into the Marian Home in Fort Dodge to be near her sister Lois. One day after she entered the Fort Dodge Medical Center she died there on Friday, December 7, 2007, at the age of 80 years, 1 month and 14 days.

Besides her husband and parents, Alta Mae is preceded in death by brother Wayne Leonard Vrooman and step-son Dennis Gene Dammann.

She is survived by her daughter Diane Caroline and husband Jack Hauswirth of Altoona; four grandchildren: Douglas Riley and wife Barbara of Lytton; Cindi and husband Ron Smith of Mingo; Mark Riley and wife Mindy of Lytton and Julie Riley of Des Moines; eight great-grandchildren Jamie, Colten, Tyler, Kortney, Peyton, Austin, Tanner and Cassidy; two sisters Shirley and husband Art Kruse of DeForest, WI and Lois and husband Paul Schreck of Fort Dodge; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
