Alta Marie, daughter of Emil A. and Mary (Witt) Wiese, was born July 7, 1901, north of Manning, in Carroll County, Iowa. She moved with her family to the Arcadia area where she was baptized in 1902. Alta attended rural school through the seventh grade and then started school in Manning. After graduating with the class of 1918 she taught school for a short time.

On January 29, 1920, Alta was united in marriage by the Presbyterian minister with Henry J.M. Hansen at her parents’ farm. Four children were born to this union. They farmed north of Manning. On October 3, 1954, Alta and Henry became members of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning. They moved into Manning in 1962 and in 1970 were fortunate to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. After the death of her husband in 1973, Alta remained in their home until December of 1990 when she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home.

Alta was a member and past president of both the American Legion Auxiliary and the Homemakers Club.

About three years ago Alta’s health began to fail and she died on Saturday, April 24, 1999, at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center at the age of 97 years, 9 months and 17 days.

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, twin sons who died in infancy; granddaughter Linda Ahrendsen, great-granddaughter Elizabeth Hansen, son-in-law Alfred Ahrendsen, and daughter-in-law Elaine Hansen.

Alta is survived by her son Alvan Hansen and his wife Dorothy of Manning; daughter Lola Ahrendsen of Manning; four grandchildren: Roger Hansen and his wife Mary of Highland’s Ranch, CO; Joy Hansen of Denver, CO; James Hansen of Chicago; and Vernon Hansen and his wife Barbara of Aurora, CO; five great-grandchildren: Cindy, Amy, Dan, Mary, and Eric Hansen; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
