Amanda Bogatzke

Funeral service for Amanda Bogatzke of Manning, Iowa, was held Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at 11:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Reverend Patrick Sparling officiated. Fern Jensen provided the music with Dan Grove as vocalist. Casketbearers were Craig Bogatzke, Martin Bogatzke, Jeff Holmes, Daniel Holmes, Todd Bogatzke, John Radtke, and Steven Fogelman. Honorary Casketbearers were Gwena Young, Pamela Mickelson, Debra Wesley, Carmen Yancey, Nancy Muhlbauer, Laura Jacobson, Karla Gierstorf, Danette Holmes. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery in Manning, Iowa.

Amanda Wilhelmina, daughter of John and Ida (Fischer) Dammann, was born February 17, 1907, on a farm four miles south of Manning, Iowa. She attended country school near her home. Amanda helped out on the farm and helped with household chores as she was growing up. Amanda was baptized March 17, 1907, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning and confirmed February 3, 1927, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, south of Manning.

On October 14, 1925, Amanda was united in marriage with Karl R. Bogatzke. He had come to the area from Minnesota to work on her uncle's farm. Amanda and Karl started farming on their own five years after they were married. Seven children were born to this union. Amanda was a homemaker, raising their children, tending the garden, canning meat and vegetables, milking cows and raising ducks and geese. She was an avid seamstress, making many quilts. When she had time, she loved going to dances and playing cards. In 1966, two years after they retired from farming, they moved into Manning. Amanda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

Amanda and Karl transferred their membership from Trinity to Zion in December of 1988. After the death of her husband on February 6, 1989, she continued to live in their home until April of 2006 when she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She died there on Friday, March 6, 2009 at the age of 102 years and 17 days.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; four children: infant son, infant daughter, and two other daughters: Mae Fogelman and Marilyn Holmes; daughter-in-law: Donna Fae Bogatzke; and four siblings: Louie Dammann, Elsie Farrell, Alfred Dammann and Luella Hammann.

Amanda is survived by her children; Marvin Bogatzke of Audubon; Myron Bogatzke and wife Wilma of Manning; and Marlene Radtke of Oregon, WI; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.
