Andrew N. Leinen

The Rite of Christian Burial for Andrew N. Leinen was held Thursday, November 21, 1991, at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Manning, Iowa. Reverend Father Ralph Reinhart was celebrant with music provided by the Sacred Heart Choir. Interment was held in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Manning, with grandchildren: Lynn Phillips, Dean Poeppe, Kim Smith, Lisa Rohe, Becky Zinke, and Andrew Leinen as casketbearers. Honorary casketbearers were Louie Hargens, Stan Ewoldt, Louie Muhlbauer, Ray Ehlers, Bill Otto, and Arlo Dammann. Prayers were held at the Ohde Funeral Home, Manning, Wednesday, November 20, 1991, with Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and prayer service followed by Rosary at 7:00 p.m.

Andrew, son of Peter M. and Anna (Ohlinger) Leinen, was born February 18, 1908, at Portsmouth, Iowa. He attended the parochial schools in Portsmouth. As a youth Andrew was an accomplished baseball player and held the position of catcher on a St. Louis farm team until 1937.

On his birthday, February 18, 1930, Andrew was united in marriage with Leone Schwery; five children, Dale, Ethel, Audrey, Alan and Doris, were born to this union. That same year Andrew began farming near Portsmouth, Iowa. In those years he was also known to his friends and family as "Brodie" or "Derby". In 1939 Andrew and his family moved and began farming in the Botna and Manning area.

In 1969 Andrew and his wife moved to Spencer, Iowa, returning to Manning in 1989. They became residents of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in 1990. He died there early Sunday morning, November 17, 1991, at the age of 83 years, 8 months, and 30 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by three grandsons, Melvin Leinen, Todd Phillips, and Adam Sembach; by a granddaughter, Leone Mae Leinen; by the following brothers and sisters: Herman Leinen, Joseph Leinen, Rose Raymond, Eva Gubbels, Martha Reinig, Melania Goetzinger, and Laura Reid; and by the following half brothers and sisters: Nick Leinen, Constance Leinen, Peter Leinen, Michael D. Leinen, Lena Schumacher, Sister Mary Leinen, and Catherine Leinen.

Survivors include his wife, Leone, of Manning, Iowa; his children: Dale Leinen and his wife, Cathie, of Anchorage, Alaska; Ethel and her husband, Loren Poeppe, of Torrington, Wyoming; Audrey and her husband, Robert Phillips, of Manning, Iowa; Alan Leinen and his wife, Alma, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Doris and her husband, Robert Sembach, of Spencer, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; the following brothers and sisters: Dett Green of Spencer, Iowa; Ann Rattenborg, of Fargo, North Dakota; Margaret Mester, of Los Angeles, California; Zeno Leinen, of Portsmouth, Iowa; Francis Leinen, of Earling, Iowa; and Clara Petersen, of Harlan, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Andrew led an active life in addition to his early career as a baseball player. While on the farm he fed large number of cattle. He was an avid hunter and fisherman; he was musically inclined and played the trumpet. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends and family. Andrew was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning.
