Mrs. C. Anthony
Laid To Rest At West Side Sunday

Anna Anthony, nee Jahn, was born October 5th, 1859, in Ostrohe, Kreis Norder Ditmarschen, near Heide in the Province of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. She was baptized and confirmed in Lutheran faith. She lived her childhood days in her native land, was educated and came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Jahn and family to America, landing on the 9th of May in the year 1873. The entire family came direct to West Side, Iowa, locating on a farm south of town, a half mile east of where the Five Mile House is now located. The deceased remained on the farm with her parents, assisting in the farm and household work. On November 21, 1879, she was united in happy wedlock with Mr. Claus Anthony, which union was blessed with 7 children of which one daughter Ernestine passed away at a tender age.

The young couple settled on a farm a mile east of the Five Mile House in Washington township, Carroll county, well known to the entire community as the old home place of the Anthony family. On this placed they toiled and managed until they retired from active farm life in 1911 when they purchased a comfortable home in West Side, where they have enjoyed, the fruits of hard labor until recently, when the wife and mother became seriously ill. The children, being aware of the seriousness of her ailment, decided to remove her to Manning in the home of her daughter, Anna, where she would be in instant reach of her physician, and the tender care of her children and husband. Everything possible in the power of skilled physicians and the tender care of her loved ones was done, but in vain. She passed away on Wednesday eve. October 25, 1933, at the age of 74 years and 21 days.

She leaves to mourn her death, besides the bereaved husband, the following children: William, Emilie, Mrs. Ed Stammer; Pauline, Mrs. Frank Hass; Henry; Herman; Anna, Mrs. John Ostermeyer. She also leaves 10 grandchildren and, one great grandchild; one brother, William Jahn of Manilla; one sister, Emilie Buck of West Side. A sister, Gretchen, Mrs. Herman Martens of West Side, and one brother, Herman Jahn, of West Side, preceded her in death. She leaves a host of other relatives and friends who mourn the death of a beloved neighbor and friend.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 29, 1933, at 2:00 p. m. from the Lutheran church in West Side, the Rev. Krummel, pastor of the church, conducting the services.
Interment was made in the Hays township cemetery attended by a large concourse of friends who paid their last rites.

Pall bearers were, Arnold Dundee, Wm. Pruter, John Oeser, Henry Kruse, Henry Schuman and Carl Piper.

The sympathy of their friends goes to the bereaved family in their hour of sorrow.

The entire community is mourning the death of this pioneer citizen who came to this country when labor was a hardship and a burden, instead of a pleasure as modern conveniences apply it today. But she enjoyed the progress; she watched the development of modern improvements and conveniences as the years passed by, and had the consolation that her children were sharing in the progress. She was a loving wife and mother and lived her life for her family and friends. Her big, motherly heart always shared in the sorrow as well as in the joys of her people. Many a word of consolation she offered when those near to her were in despair. Her council patched up many an aching heart, and for these, and many other reasons, is the passing of this noble woman a direct loss to the community. A chair is vacant in the home, and a loving mother, a kind neighbor and friend has gone to her reward.
May her soul rest in peace.
