Mrs. Marcus Kuehl Dead.
It was a surprise to the people of this community to learn last Tuesday morning of the death of Mrs. Marcus Kuehl, at her home west of town. Death came without any warning just after the supper hour, when the family had sat down to read. Mrs. Kuehl was reading when she made a peculiar yawn and her husband asked her if she was sleepy. When he received no reply he went to her and found that life had flown. This was a great shock to the family, as she had been feeling fine all day and had eaten a hearty supper. A physician was summoned but found that nothing could be done that death already had claimed her.

Mrs. Anna Kuehl, nee Kuehl, was born July 10, 1841, in Hormerkirchen, Holstein, Germany. In 1873, she, with her brother, Fred, came to America and lived at Davenport one year, then came to Crawford County, where on July 11, 1874, she was married to Marcus Kuehl. Seven children came to bless this happy union, of which only four are alive, the other three dying in infancy. Those who are left are Edward, Charles, Emma and Ida.

In the death of this good woman, the family loses a loving wife and mother. Mrs. Kuehl was an everyday Christian and her death is an irreparable loss to the home circle. Her death was gentle, but like the still water it was deep. In her heart of hearts she carried those she loved, and her hand was never weary in doing for those who were in any way dependent upon her. Her devotion as wife and mother, her kindness to everybody will long linger as a memory in the home as well as among her neighbors which her presence brightened. But today all that was mortal of this grand lady is at rest in the silent city.

The funeral was held at her home last Friday afternoon, June 5, conducted by Rev. Ansorge of the German Lutheran Church and she was laid to rest in the Hayes Township Cemetery beside a brother of Mr. Kuehl. A long procession of sorrowing friends followed her to her last resting place, the casket being banked with nature's loveliest emblems.

Those from out of town who attended her funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bremer, of Holstein, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. William Kuehl of Keystone, Iowa; Mrs. Matilda Westfall, of Davenport; Jochin Kuehl, Vanhorn. The family has the sympathy of all in this sad separation.
