July 21, 1887
Manning Monitor

Died, on Saturday morning, July 17, 1887, Anna, wife of Christian J. Larson of Manning, aged 27 years and two days.

Anna Bergesen was the maiden name of deceased. She was born July 15, 1860, on a steamboat in the St. Lawrence river at the docks in Montreal, the parents being en route from Norway, their native country, to the State of Wisconsin. Here the family lived for four years, during which time the father was a. soldier in the Union army; but after his discharge they moved to Story county, Iowa, where they now reside.

On the 8th of September 1886, deceased was united in marriage to Mr. C.J. Larson of Manning and on the 6th inst. there was born unto them a daughter. On the ninth day after the birth of the child the mother was taken with puerperal fever and during the early morning of the 17th inst. she closed her eyes in death despite the tender care of loving friends and medical aid.

This is a peculiarly sad death and calls out the deepest sympathies of every one in the great affliction that has befallen the young husband and father. Less than a year ago the MONITOR chronicled the marriage and now it is called upon to note the death of one of the parties to this union. There was not a more pleasant home in Manning nor was there a couple who had brighter prospects before them. But all of this happiness, this expectant prosperity, has faded away gone. The little daughter will never know what a mother's care is, nor by her rocked to sleep, nor when the little one is tired and fretful and no one but a mother's gentle caresses can soothe baby, she will not be there.

Mrs. Larson was a consistent Christian, being a member of the Lutheran church, and even in the last moments of her life offered up prayer to her Maker. During her short residence here she made hosts of friends, and by those who knew her intimately she was loved and by every one highly respected.

The funeral services were held on Sunday evening at 8:30, Rev. I.H. Elliot preaching the sermon. Manning Hose Co. No. 1, of which Mr. Larson is a member, took charge of the funeral and followed the remains to the Milwaukee depot and the east bound train carried them on the way to Story City, Story County, where they were interred in the cemetery.

Messrs. W.J. Morrow and Joseph Arp were sent by the hose company as an escort to their afflicted comrade. The sorrow of the whole community in this sad death was shown at the depot on the evening of the funeral.

Manning Hose Co. No. 1, drafted the following resolutions to show their sympathy for their afflicted comrade:
