Arlene Louise Subbert was born May 29, 1927, in Carroll, Iowa; one of seven children born to Chris and Marie (Hein) Subbert. She grew up in Lidderdale, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and then attended school in Carroll.

Arlene loved to dance, and at a dance in Carroll she met her husband, Glen Kusel, who was serving in the Army. The couple married July 14, 1946, in Carroll and moved to Ft. Benning, Georgia, where Glen was stationed at the time. Following Glen's discharge, they moved to Manning, which has been their lifetime home.

Glen and Arlene were blessed with four daughters, Pamela Jean, Connie Jo, Jerilyn Joy and Carlys June. While raising her girls, she was employed at the LR Nelson Manufacturing plant, and then worked as secretary for the Manning Light Office. She later opened Manning's first child care center, Kiddie Corner, in a home next door to their residence and grew the business to include a preschool.

Arlene was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. She and Glen were members of the "Mr. and Mrs. Group," and she was a member of Ladies Guild.

She loved to be active. She bowled, golfed, played cards, and loved to cook and entertain. Arlene enjoyed her flower garden and, in her later years, she became a quilter. She put love in each quilt made for her children and grandchildren.

She and Glen moved to the Manning Plaza in August 2011, and this year they were able to celebrate 69 years of marriage. They enjoyed participating in the Plaza activities, and Arlene especially enjoyed talking with the many wonderful caregivers. Because of numerous health issues she died September 22, 2015, at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 4 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law Alan Kusel; brothers Howard and Wayne Subbert; sisters Bernice Launderville, LaVonne Bock, and Donna Mae White and sister-in-law Dorothy Subbert.

She is survived by husband Glen Kusel of Manning; daughters Pamela Kusel of Manning, Connie Walter and husband Ivan of Denver, Colorado, Jerilyn Kusel of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Carlys Stribe and her husband Allen of Manning; six grandchildren Amy Benton and husband Brad of Manning, Beth Vitiritto and husband Brad of Ankeny, David Buzzard and wife Michelle of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Nathan Buzzard of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jennifer Morris and husband Alan of Manning and Scott Stribe of Mt. Pleasant; ten great-grandchildren; a sister Jeanette Lerssen of Manning and sister-in-law Phyllis Subbert of Glidden, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
