Arlo William, son of Alfred and Kathryn (Weller) Gottsch, was born May 2, 1931, at Manning, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm south of Westside, and attended rural school close by. In February of 1952, Arlo was inducted into the United States Army and served with a field artillery unit at Okinawa, Japan. After receiving his honorable discharge in January of 1954, he returned to the family farm near Westside.

On May 22, 1954, Arlo was united in marriage with Mary Lou Cossaart in Omaha, Nebraska. They made their home and farmed south of Westside. In 1980 they retired from farming, but remained on the farm. From 1980 to 1998 Arlo worked as a security guard at Farmland in Carroll. Mary Lou passed away August 2, 1992.

On Saturday, April 14, 2001, Arlo passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska after suffering a heart attack at his home. He was 69 years, 11 months and 12 days of age.

Arlo was a member of the United Church of Westside and Alfred Rossman Post 196 of the American Legion in Westside. He enjoyed restoring antique tractors, farming, fishing, being outdoors, feeding the birds and gardening. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather.

Besides his parents and wife, Arlo was preceded in death by a son-in-law Larry Riesberg.

He is survived by four daughters: Kathy and her husband Dennis Venner of Arcadia; Karen and her husband Steven Hesson of Oviedo, Florida; Rhonda and her husband Stanley Westergard of Vinton; Lori and her husband Dennie Huisenga of Owatonna, Minnesota; a son Andrew Gottsch of Hinton; 15 grandchildren: Devon Riesberg and his wife Stephanie; Kelly, Bradley and Travis Riesberg; Stephanie and Stacie Venner; Rebecca (Hesson) and her husband Byron Twogood; Steven Hesson II; John and Kathryn Westergard; Eric, Kyle and Bret Huisenga; Jennifer and Joseph Bennett, and their mother Anita Gottsch; two sisters Alice and her husband Roy Buck of Garden Grove, California and Arletta and her husband Maurice Debbaut of Council Bluffs; two sisters-in-law Rose Marie Pearson of Mohave Valley, Arizona and Joyce and her husband Michael Tollins of Los Angeles, California; a brother-in-law Darrel Cossaart and his wife Glenna of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
