On July 27, 1949, Bernyce was united in marriage with Marvin D. Gaer at St. Joseph, Missouri. They soon moved to her father's farm near Irwin where they farmed for six years. Two daughters were born to this union.

In 1962 the family moved to Manning, Iowa where Marvin began working as a police officer. After her girls were older, Bernyce worked at the bakery, newspaper office and as a housekeeper at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home.

Bernyce was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliaries and the United Methodist Church in Manning. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
