Bertha Marie French, the daughter of Otto and Marie (Riechmann) Rudnick, was born November 29, 1910, on the family farm, near Lincoln Township, Iowa. She attended grade school at Trinity Lutheran Church where she was baptized in 1910 and confirmed in 1925. She graduated from Gray High School in 1929 and then went on to Secretary School in Omaha, Nebraska.

Bertha married Vern LeRoy French on September 18, 1935 in Shenandoah, Iowa. After their marriage she worked and lived as a homemaker in Audubon County, Council Bluffs, Spencer, and Boyden, Iowa.

Bertha enjoyed playing cards, dominos, sewing and crocheting, but her biggest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.

Bertha passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa, at the age of 100. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 3 sisters, Eliza Rutz, Minnie Boers, and Dorothy Rudnick; 8 brothers, Reinhard, Gustav, Herbert, Alfred, John, Carl, August, and Oscar Rudnick; one infant child, Vernelle; one son, LeRoy Lewis French; and one son-in-law, Lester Winter.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Mary Ellen Winter, of Boyden, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
