Lucille Brus

Lucille Myrtle, daughter of John and Louella Wheeler Campbell, was born September 8, 1911, near Botna in Shelby County, Iowa. Lucille completed grade school in a one-room school near her home and graduated with the Manning High School class of 1929. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls for two years and subsequently taught for 5 years at Jefferson #1 in Shelby County, White Bear School in Carroll County and at Gray Consolidated.

On June 4, 1936, Lucille was united in marriage with LeRoy J. Brus in Harlan. Three children were born to this union. They farmed for three years in Jefferson Township and then north of Gray until 1959 when they bought her father's farm south of Botna. Lucille assisted with the dairying and the poultry flocks, and loved her garden and flowers. She enjoyed working with the women of' the Carroll County Extension Service. As soon as her children were old enough for 4-H, Lucille became a club leader and eventually Carroll County 4-H Chairman. Lucille and LeRoy retired from farming in 1985 and in 1991 moved to Harlan to be closer to their children. In August of 1992, Lucille became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community. At the same time LeRoy became a resident of the Baptist Memorial Home where he died March 8, 1995.

While living near Manning, Lucille attended the First Presbyterian Church in Manning with her family. After moving to Harlan, she was baptized and became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan and enjoyed participating with the United Methodist Women. Lucille enjoyed volunteering, socializing, reading and visiting nursing home residents. She was a kind and appreciative woman who enjoyed baking exceptional rye bread and strawberry pie.

Due to declining health in 2001, Lucille moved into the nursing home portion of Elm Crest Retirement Community, and on July 9, 2002. she died at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 2 days.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister Bernice Hauschildt.
