She attended St. Mary's School in Panama, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1945. Catherine earned her bachelor's degree in 1949 from Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas. She returned home and taught at St. Mary's High School for a short time.

On February 14, 1950, Catherine was united in marriage with Jerome Croghan at St. Mary's Church in Panama. Thirteen children were born to this union. The family lived and farmed near Botna, southeast of Manilla, Iowa. In 1991, shortly after retiring from the farm, they moved to their new home south of Manning. Catherine was a homemaker until her retirement when she started working in the laundry department of Manning Regional Healthcare Center. She was an excellent mother, and truly enjoyed baking, sewing and housecleaning. She had a most positive attitude about life and a strong faith. Catherine was a devout member of Sacred Heart Church in Manning. It was important to Catherine to help people in need and to be with her family and friends.

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
