Catherine Jans
DEATH OF MRS. JANS.
Mrs. Catharine Jans, wife of Gustav Jans, a wealthy farmer who resides four miles south of
the city, died in a hospital at Council Bluffs on Saturday morning, August 11. The remains
were shipped home for interment, arriving here on the Milwaukee limited at 8:44 Saturday
evening. From the station the remains were borne to the home of D. Martens, on May Street,
where they lay until 2:30 Sunday afternoon, when the funeral took place. Short services were
held on the Martens lawn beneath the shade trees. Many were the friends of the deceased
and these were there to pay their last respects. Berthold Kraus, editor and proprietor of Der
Manning Herold, spoke the funeral eulogy, which was replete with beautiful thought. At the
close of the service the remains were placed in the hearse and the funeral cortege wound its
way to the cemetery to the south, where interment took place.
Mrs. Catharine Jans was born in Holstein, Germany, 43 years ago, and came with her parents to America while in her teens. She was married to Gustav Jans in 1882, and unto this union five children were born, one son and four daughters the eldest being 17 years old.
Some fifteen years ago Mrs. Jans was thrown from a horse and received injuries about the head, affecting her brain, and from which she never recovered. Some time ago she was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The Monitor extends sympathy to the husband and his children in the loss of wife and mother.
