Charles "Fritz" Hagedorn
Taken By Death August 30, 1934
(Grandfather of Ralph Hagedorn)

We present here with obituary of Charles F. Hagedorn, who passed away on Friday morning of last week at his home in South Manning. His death came as a surprise to many of his many friends. Being active and well until a few months ago, it was never expected that his end was so near.

Charles Frederick Hagedorn was born on March 11th in the year 1858 in the province of Schleswig Holstein, Germany. He was the youngest son of Hans and Maria Hagedorn. As a very young man he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.

He received his education in his native country and when of drafting age he served for three years, from 1878 to 1881 in the 9th Company, Infantry Regiment No. 86. After his honorable discharge he decided to go to America.

In1882 he came to the United States and landed at West Side, Iowa, where he worked on a farm. On the 3rd of August in the year 1886 he was married to Johanna Petersen, and for three years after their marriage they lived on a farm near Aspinwall. To this union were born two children, who besides his wife, are left to mourn his loss. They are Amanda (Mrs. Peter Petersen) of Manning. There are also 9 grandchildren who are bereaved by his death. For 22 years Mr. and Mrs. Hagedorn have resided in the south of Manning, and there they have enjoyed those years of hard earned retirement up to few months ago Mr. Hagedorn was in good health considering his advancing years, and it was not until June of this year that his health showed signs of failing. The end then came rapidly, and at 5 o'clock on Sunday morning, August 24th, he passed peacefully away to the homeland.

Mr. Hagedorn was a hard working man, and all his life he bent himself seriously to, the tasks given him. For many years he was a devoted member of the Manning Liederkrantz, and he gave unstintingly of his time and energies to this organization. He will be greatly missed and the sympathies of many friends are sorrowfully tender to his wife and children in this, their day or grief.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 26, 1934, at the Ohde Funeral Home at two o'clock in the afternoon, the Rev. E.J. Hough, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Manning officiating. The music was furnished by the Manning Liederkrantz and as pallbearers acted some of the members, they were: Julius Rostermundt, Herman Hagedorn, George F. Boelter, Emil Sander, Peter Rix, and Wilhelm Hauschildt. Interment was made in the Manning cemetery.

Mr. Hagedorn was 76 years, 5 months and 13 days of age when he died. May his soul rest in peace.

Note: There are birth & death year discrepancies between the obituary and the city/ tombstone records which lists "Fritz" Hagedorn as born in 1851 and died 1936. Fritz is buried next to Johanna S. Hagedorn.

Charles "Fritz" Hagedorn is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
