MANNING ---- Clara Grau Cox. 87, died Wednesday, April 29, 1981 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. She had been a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home for more than two years.
Mrs. Cox taught rural and independent schools in Carroll, Audubon and Calhoun Counties for eight years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Zion Lutheran church here with the Rev. Edward F. Heinicke officiating. Burial will be in the Manning cemetery under the direct tion of the Ohde Funeral Home of Manning. Mrs., Dorothy Kusel will be organist for the final rites.
Surviving are a brother Herman Grau, Manning; a sister Mrs. Elmer (Laura) Alwill, Manning; many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters: Mrs. Ida Kusel and Mrs. Sophia Rothfolk and two brothers: Johnny, as an infant, and Emil Grau.
Mrs. Cox was born June 14, 1893. on a farm seven miles south of Manning in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, a daughter of August Fredrich and Maria Dorothea Hansen Grau. She attended rural schools near her home and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She was graduated from Manning High School in 1912. Later she attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, and after completion of her training began to teach in area schools.
She was married to Frank Cliffton Cox. September 29, 1920. They spent a year in California before returning to the Manning area. Mr. Cox died on January 21, 1963.
As the oldest living graduate of Manning High School, Mrs. Cox had been interested in the activities leading up to the forthcoming centennial celebration.
