Funeral services for Claus J. Claussen, 79, were held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Ohde Funeral Home at Manning, with Dr. F.E. Hamlin, Denison, former pastor of the Manning Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was in the Manning Cemetery.

Ray Pratt was soloist for the service and Mrs. H.W. Hagedorn the organist.

Mr. Claussen, who had been ill for two weeks, died Friday evening, January 23 at the Manning General Hospital, where he had been a patient since January 18.

Son of Hans C. and Magdalene (Buhmann) Claussen, he was born May 28, 1879, in Delstedt, Germany. At the age of five, he came to the Westside area with is parents and to Manning a year later. Following his education in the Manning Schools, he was employed by the Doud Milling Company, the Henry Hoffmann & Co. store, and for many years was a partner in the Rober-Wehrmann Co. until 1939, when he was semi-retired.

On May 15, 1908, he married Clara Ewoldt at Manning. She survives, with four children: Mrs. Arthur (Ila) Rix, Manning; Mrs. Alvera Miller, Miami, Florida; Major Glen Claussen, Arlington, Virginia; Gene Claussen, Iowa City, Iowa; seven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Herman (Margaretha) Hoffmann, Manning; three brothers: Herman Claussen, Winterset; Harry Claussen, Coffeeville, Kansas, and Herbert Claussen, St. Louis, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Ella Lane and Mrs. Betty Holmberg, and two brothers, William and Rudolph Claussen.

Mr. Claussen was a member of the Presbyterian Church; a past mast of Manual Lodge AF & AM 450, A.F. & A.M. Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star; and a former member of the Manning Fire Department.

Mr. and Mrs. Claussen observed their golden wedding anniversary May 15, 1958.


Claus Claussen is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
