Claus J. Karsten Is Laid To Rest

Claus Johan Karsten was born in Brunsbuttel, Schleswig Holstein, Germany, March 24, 1877.

He was the third son and the fifth child of Wilken and Magdeline Karsten. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Germany.

In the year 1883, when he was seven years of age, the family moved from Germany to America, landing at Westside, and then settling on a farm in Warren Township.

Claus worked on the family farm staying there for 42 years, and for the last 26 years he was in partnership with his brother Emil.

His parents preceded him in death and also two brothers, Peter and John Frederick.

Mr. Karsten was unmarried and he is survived by 3 brothers and 4 sisters; Henry, August, Emil, Maggie, (Mrs. William Opperman), Mary, (Mrs. Gustav Vinke), Katie, (Mrs. Herman Rowedder), and Emma, (Mrs. Walter Laurinat).

Claus Karsten was a quiet but hard working Man, and to those who knew him he was regarded as a firm friend. His illness was of a very short duration and his sudden death came as a shock to his brothers and sisters, He died at the Wyatt Hospital on October 11 in the evening of that day at the age of 57 years, 7 months and 9 days.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Ohde funeral home, the Rev. E.J. Hough, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Manning, officiating. Interment was made at the Manning cemetery. Six of his nephews acted as pall bearers.

He will be much missed, and our community extends its sincere condolences to those who mourn the passing of this good man.
