Darlene Rachel Lamp was born May 23, 1931, in Manning, Iowa, to Gerhardt and Minnie (Hansen) Lamp. Living on a farm, she walked to Ewoldt No. 7 Country School where she first learned English. German was their primary language at home. Darlene graduated from Manning High in 1948, the year they won the State of Iowa Basketball Championship.

She was raised on a farm surrounded by seven uncles: Marvin, Frank, Edward, Vertus, Herman, Hubert, Charley, and one aunt, Jessie. Her grandparents, Jochim and Agnes (Wiese) Lamp were known for their close-knit family who had a strong belief in God, hard work, and serving the U.S.A.

Grandparents, John F. Hansen and Mary Magdelena Lorenzen, had twelve children. Darlene's mom, Minnie, was the fifth child. There were more relatives in Hayes Township. Everyone was related somehow back then in Manning. Darlene was an excellent cook and baker. She was known for her wedding and anniversary cake decorating. She drove a tractor, farmed, gardened, and performed farming chores. It was expected of everyone. Darlene won the Carroll County pig calling contest one year. She had a lot of creative talent and was a very good seamstress and quilt maker. She enjoyed being on a bowling league, winning many trophies; and played Bingo, winning quite often at that also. Her son, Michael was born February 21, 1964, in Manning and raised on the farm.

Darlene was a hairstylist in town, on North Main Street for many years, later on moving the salon to her home. She held many positions at the VFW Hall with the Woman's Auxiliary. She was active there her entire life. Her Mother and Aunt Amanda were charter members. Darlene was the Historian for the VFW and made their wonderful scrapbooks. She helped with the luncheons from childhood on. She worked for the Seed Company in Coon Rapids, Iowa, and the G.E. Factory in Carroll, Iowa. Darlene was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning.

Darlene passed away peacefully early Friday, November 25, 2016, at the Manning Plaza in Manning, Iowa at the age of 85. Preceding her in death were her parents and grandparents: Jochim and Agnes (Wiese) Lamp and John F. and Mary (Lorenzen) Hansen and brother, Clarence "C.O." Lamp, who wrote the Past and Present Column in The Manning Monitor for 39 years.

She is survived by her son Michael Lamp of Baxter Springs, Kansas; nieces: Toni and husband Mark Hengesteg of Montgomery, Texas, and Lea Jane Lamp of Peoria, Arizona; nephew, Calvin Lamp of Sun City, Arizona; grandnephews: Nathan Lamp and wife Sarah of Gilbert, Arizona; and David Hengesteg and wife Heather of Tomball, Texas; grandniece, Kathryn and husband Russ Garwood of Seattle, Washington; cousins: Joanne (Lamp) and husband Ron Dunkerson of Panora, Iowa, Gerhardt Voge and wife Billie of Manning, Iowa, the late Sam Wiese and wife Millicent of Manning, Iowa, Gene Wiese and wife Jean of Manning, Iowa, Kay (Mueller) and her husband George McNary of Omaha, Nebraska, Ann (Mueller) Gale of Algona, Iowa, Judy (Mueller) Schroeder of Harlan, Iowa, Robert Mueller of Manning, Iowa, Dorothy Dettbarn of Westside, Iowa, Brenda Lou Boell and husband John Hinrichsen of Boone, Iowa, Barbara Drees Herr and husband Greg McCann of Tyndall, South Dakota; and many more dear cousins, family, and friends.
