Mercedes Deah, daughter of Jesse Charles and Georgia Wade (McClellan) Schwarzenbach, was born April 19, 1923, in Carroll, Iowa. Deah grew up in Carroll. Following her graduation from Carroll High School she worked as a secretary.

On April 26, 1946, Deah was united in marriage with Frank West in Carroll. They farmed south of Glidden until Frank's death in 1978. Deah then moved back to Carroll for two years.

On August 26, 1980, Deah was united in marriage with Herbert Bruhn in Glidden. Deah and Herb made their home on Herb's farm north of Manning.

Deah was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a past-president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She also held a lifetime membership with the Carroll County Historical Society and the State Historical Society. She enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, quilting and doing needlepoint. Deah had been in poor health since a month-long hospital stay beginning in December of 2000, and on Thursday, February 22, 2001, Deah died at her home north of Manning, Iowa. She was 77 years, 10 months and 3 days of age.

Besides her parents and first husband, Deah was preceded in death by two brothers Nick and Kenneth Schwarzenbach; and three sisters Dallas Neuquist, Betty Schwarzenbach and Roberta Schwarzenbach.

She is survived by her husband Herbert Bruhn of Manning; a son Rick Bradley and his wife Vicki of Westside; a stepdaughter Colleen and her husband Don Wright of Sac City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother Donald Schwarzenbach and his wife Agnes of Council Bluffs; a sister-in-law Hilda Schwarzenbach of Carroll; and by other relatives and friends.
