Delores Grace Fastje

Delores Grace Fastje was born on a farm in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa, February 11, 1926, the daughter of James and Sophie (Grau) Rothfolk. She was raised on the farm and graduated from the Manning High School with the Class of 1944. In 1946, Delores was baptized and confirmed in her Christian faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Following high school she taught in the rural schools. She later received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

On August 15, 1950, Delores was united in marriage with Frederick William "Bill" Fastje at Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, Iowa. They made their home in Denison where they were blessed with two sons, Dan and Tom. Delores was an elementary teacher in the Denison Community Schools for forty plus years until her retirement. In her leisure time she enjoyed sewing, making all of her own clothes and draperies for their home, cooking for her family, gardening, walking, was a voracious reader and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member and former Sunday School Teacher at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Bill died December 18, 2010, and Delores continued to reside in their home in Denison until moving to Silveridge.

In April of 2013 Delores moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where her death occurred Tuesday afternoon, September 24, 2013. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 87 years, 7 months and 13 days. Including her parents and her husband, Delores was also preceded in death by one son, Tom Fastje, October 17, 2012, one brother, Norman Rothfolk and three sisters: Lorraine Gruhn, Elda Barten and Eileen Mundt. Those remaining to cherish her memory include one son, Dan Fastje and wife Cindy of Denison, Iowa, four grandchildren: Jake and Ben Fastje of Des Moines, Iowa, Nicholas Fastje and wife, Kaitlyn of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Nathan Fastje of Denison; one sister, MaryAnn Birchard of Spokane Valley, Washington, one sister-in-law, Mary Jane Rothfolk of Manning, Iowa, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 28, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and the Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Music for the service included a congregational hymn of "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and solo selections "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace" with Larry Boeck as soloist and Karen Kahl as organist. Honorary Pallbearers included her grandchildren, Jake, Ben, Nicholas and Nathan Fastje. Following the services the family invited everyone to join them at Cronk's in Denison for a luncheon and fellowship.
