Dolores F. Backhaus

Funeral services for Dolores F. Backhaus were held Tuesday, February 14, 1995, at Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla, Iowa. Reverend Kenneth Ritchie of United Church of Manilla, Manilla, Iowa, officiated the service with Barbara Agan as organist and Kay Rutherford as vocalist. Interment was held in Nishnabotna Cemetery, near Manilla, Iowa, with Todd Backhaus, Scott Backhaus, Kevin Finken, David Backhaus, Brian Finken, and Jason Humrich as casketbearers. Honorary casketbearers were Heather Humrich, Jamie Backhaus, Aaron Marks, Sara Backhaus, Steven Marks, and Daniel Marks.

Dolores, daughter of Harry and Louise (Nulle) Stoelk, was born April 8, 1923, in Carroll County, Iowa. She attended rural schools near her home and graduated from Manilla High School in 1940.

Dolores worked in the office of the lumber yard in Manilla and worked as a cook at the Manning hospital. On September 12, 1943, Dolores was united in marriage with Wallace "Bud" Backhaus at the Lutheran Church in Manilla. Four children were born to this union. Dolores and Bud farmed all their lives near Manilla. In 1974 they moved to Denison, returning to Manilla four years later. After their return to Manilla Dolores worked as an attendant at the Ohde Funeral Home there for ten years until they moved to Arizona in 1992.

Dolores died suddenly and unexpectedly on Wednesday evening, February 8, 1995, at Valley Lutheran Hospital, Mesa, Arizona. She was 71 years, and 10 months of age.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one nephew, Curtis Stoelk.

Survivors include her husband, Wallace "Bud" Backhaus, of Mesa, Arizona; four children: Doug Backhaus and his wife, Marilyn, of Manilla; Carolyn and her husband, James Humrich, of Ballwin, Missouri; Karen "Kitty" and her husband, Randall Finken, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Barbara and her husband, Dean Marks, of Mesa, Arizona; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Lester Stoelk and his wife, Eleanor, of Portland, Oregon; a niece, Cindy Tedmus, of San Francisco, California; and friends.
