Mrs. Henry Kuhl, Pioneer Lady, Passed Away

Dorathea (Schroeder) Kuhl was born in Howaldsberg, Kries Ploen, in the Parish of Giekau, Holstein, Germany, on January 29, 1849. This is one of the most beautiful parts of Germany, and in this delightful environment Mrs. Kuhl spent her childhood years. While still in her teens she came to Stakendorf in the Probstei and there she worked, taking care of small children. This work she did until she was confirmed in Giekau. Following her confirmation she returned to Stakendorf and took up other duties in the same household. In Stakendorf she met her future husband, and in that place the young couple decided to leave their native shores for America.

Mrs. Kuhl came to the United States in the year 1872, direct to Davenport, Iowa. In the following year, 1873, she was married to Mr. Henry Kuhl, to which union 5 children were born, namely: Adolph of Mohall, North Dakota; Gustav who passed away in 1908; Charles of Manning; Rudolph of Manning; Anna, Mrs. Henry Jansen of Manning.

Her husband, Henry Kuhl, passed away on May 20th, 1920, and since then Mrs. Kuhl has made her home at the corner of Ann and Fifth Streets.

When they first came to America Mr. and Mrs. Kuhl were farmers, and after their marriage they settled on a small farm near Mount Joy, Iowa, where they farmed with one horse, hoe, shovel and forks. In the year 1884 they moved to Manning and rented a farm 2 miles west of town, which they rented for 9 years. Later they purchased the 160 acre farm located 2 miles west and one half mile north of Manning, and this place is now occupied by the son Charles.

For some time Mrs. Kuhl had been failing in health. She was an aged lady, and notwithstanding the kindly care of her children and the best of medical attention she gradually went downhill until on Sunday, March the 4th, 1934, she peacefully slipped away to everlasting rest.

Dorathea Kuhl is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
