Duane Harry, son of Harry and Alice (Bahr) Karsten was born October 11, 1943, in Carroll County, Iowa. He attended country school until the fourth grade and graduated from Manning High School in 1963.

In 1965, Duane enlisted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Abu Dhabi, Ethiopia and drove a delivery truck. Duane was honorably discharged in 1967. He returned to Manning and worked on the family farm. On September 15, 1989, Duane was united in marriage with Cindy Hinners at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He continued to work on the family farm. Duane also worked for Spies Fur Company for 50 years having various duties.

Duane was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Manning American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Sportsman Trap Club. He enjoyed fishing trips with his family, hunting, attending his kids sporting events and raising cattle, hogs and chickens. Duane was on the board at the Aspinwall Co-op and a hunter safety course instructor. He was a great story teller and loved being around his dogs and grandson Kason.

In 2014, Duane was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer but he never allowed that to slow him down. His health began to decline last week and he died on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at Manning Regional Hospital at the age of 73 years, 4 months, and 14 days.

Preceding him in death are his parents Harry and Alice Karsten and brother Roland in infancy.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Cindy Karsten of Manning; children Cole Hinners of Denison, Alison Karsten (Jacob Jacobsen) of Manning and Dustin Karsten (Ashley Shinn) of Manning; grandson Kason Jacobsen of Manning; sister Shirley (Glen) Ahrendsen of Manning, nephew Aaron Ahrendsen of Manning; other relatives, and friends.
