Earl Arthur Hays

Earl Arthur Hays, son of Harry and Elvira Hays, was born at Holdridge, Nebraska, October 29, 1894. He passed away at his summer home at Lake Okoboji, August 12, 1957. He was sixty-two years of age.

When he was a small boy, the family moved from Nebraska to Aspinwall, Iowa. A few years later, they moved to the nearby town of Manning. There he attended school and worked several years for the Manning Creamery.

In 1914, he went to St. Joe, Missouri, and attended a school of veterinary medicine for the following three years. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1917 and served until the end of the first World War.

While he was in St. Joe, he was united in marriage to Miss Sara Howland of Rolfe, Iowa, on December 5, 1914.

In 1917, they located in Lanesboro, Iowa, where Dr. Hays practiced his profession of veterinarian for several years. In 1924, he moved to Lake City and continued his practice until he retired in 1945. In the spring of 1954, Dr. and Mrs. Hays located in Ft. Dodge where they made their permanent home.

The members of his immediate family who survive him are his wife, Mrs. Sarah Hays of Ft. Dodge; his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Hays, also of Ft. Dodge; and three grandchildren, Kenneth, Margery, and Paul Hays. He was one in a family of seven children. One brother has passed away. He leaves the following sisters: Mrs. Clyde Doolittle of Des Moines; Mrs. Harlod White of Park Rapids, Minnesota; Mrs. Henry Grelck, Mrs. Earl Barsby, and Mrs. M.L. Wiese, all of Manning. He also leaves several other relatives who are a little more distantly connected.

Dr. Hays was a public-spirited man who was always interested in everything that pertained to the welfare of the communities in which he lived. He was a member of both the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion in Lake City.
