Mass of Christian Burial was held for Ed Long Monday, November 21, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Manning, Iowa. A Rosary led by Peg Scheidt and Prayer Service by Reverend Andrew Hoffman was held Sunday, November 20, 2005 at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa.

Concelebrants were Reverend Andrew Hoffman and Reverend James McAlpin. Lector was Ray Thielen, Eucharistic Minister was Margaret Freese. Mass servers were Ericka Tank and Noah Tank and Gift Bearers were Matthew Long and Katelin Venteicher. Music was provides by the congregation and Sacred Heart Choir. Melanie Long was vocalist with Maureen Halbur as organist. There was also recorded music.

Casketbearers were Douglas Long, Curtis Long, Ronald Long, Thomas Long, Lynn Venteicher and Brandon Long. Interment was held in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Manning, Iowa with Military Honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517 and the American Legion Emil Ewoldt Post 22.

Edmund Leo, son of Joseph L. and Elizabeth C. (Reiff) Long, was born January 8, 1928 at Lake Park, Iowa. The family moved to Manilla while he was an infant, and Ed completed grade in the Manilla Schools. He then entered the United States Navy. During World War II, Ed served as a fireman on the USS Los Angeles in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in December on 1947 and returned to Manilla.

On June 7, 1948, Ed was united in marriage with Marian C. Hoffman at Sacred Heart Church in Manning. The Couple resided in Manning and five children were born to their union. Ed worked at several jobs around the area, including the packing plant in Denison, Priebe & Sons egg plant in Manning, and Pacific Adhesives (now American Protein). He also worked as a plant operator for Rural Water before retiring in 1992. Ed and Marian moved to Carroll in 1999.

Ed was a member of the St. Lawrence parish in Carroll, life-time member of V.F.W. Post 3517 and member of the American Legion Emil Ewoldt Post 22. In his spare time, he enjoyed working on engines, fishing, hunting and watching football.

Due to declining health, Ed became a resident of St. Anthony Nursing Home this past summer. After a brief hospital stay, Ed died peacefully at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa, on November 17, 2005, at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 9 days.

Preceding Ed in death are his parents and brothers James and Joseph Long.

Ed is survived by wife Marian Long of Carroll; five children: Doug Long and wife Diana of Cedar Rapids; Curt Long and wife Margaret of Urbandale; Sue and husband Lynn Venteicher of Pella; Ron Long and friend Lori King of Breda; Tom Long and wife Geri of San Diego, California; ten grandchildren; five siblings: Lenus Long and wife Phyllis of Windsor, California; Cyril Long and wife Lucille of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Denny Long and wife Kathy of Stockton, California; Bob Long and wife Mary Jane of Perry; Mary Schnuettgen of Elk Horn, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
