Eliza Kelly
Death of Mrs. Kelly:
Last Sunday night the soul of Mrs. Eliza Kelly passed into the life immortal. After years of
patient suffering, then came painless and peaceful release. To the community generally it
seemed somewhat sudden, but to those who watched with tender ministry at her bedside the
failing of her strength had been manifest for some time, and they were conscious that the
end could not be far away. Her husband survives to bear grief in loneliness. In early life the
deceased was a busy active woman, full of "good works and deeds which she did."
Contributing greatly to the church work of this community, for years she was actively
connected with the M.E. Church. Paralysis overcame her and she long bore affliction with
Christian grace. Her maiden name was Sherman. She was born in Putland County, Vermont
in 1840. With her husband she came west in 1867, they, thus being old settlers in these
parts. The funeral was conducted Tuesday afternoon by their pastor, Rev. Alexander Bennett,
and was attended by a large concourse of neighbors and friends. Interment was in
Greenwood Cemetery. Grateful and blessed recollections of her continue among the people.
Her life was a benediction to many and the assurance of the book of her devotion is that her
victorious endurance of affliction shall "work out" for her "a far more exceeding and eternal
weight of glory."
