Death of Mrs. J.M. Ferguson
November 16, 1905
Manning Monitor

Mrs. J.M. Ferguson died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clint Ross at Audubon, last Thursday afternoon after several days illness caused by falling and dislocating her shoulder soon after she went to Audubon for a visit and this, coupled with old age, caused her death.

Grandma Ferguson, as we know her best, has lived right here among us ever since Manning has been a town and has always been honored and loved by those who knew her. She has been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. J.T. Hockett who lives west of town since the death of her husband about eight years ago and has always enjoyed life and the best of health.

Mrs. Elizabeth (Hilsabeck) Ferguson was born in Stolks County, N.C., September 30, 1821, of Dutch parentage. She moved with her parents to Owen County, Indiana at 14 years of age. She was married to J.M. Ferguson October 16, 1838. By this union there were 12 children born of which seven are still living. They moved to central Iowa in 1847 near Marshalltown and moved from there to Crawford County in 1874, since which time she has been living in Manning and vicinity. She was a member of the Christian Church having joined many years ago and has always been a good Christian woman; her friends and her acquaintances. The remains were shipped from Audubon to Manning last Saturday morning and conducted to the Hilsabeck cemetery (Iowa Township) northwest of town followed by a long concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends where interment took place. A short ceremony took place at the grave, Rev. A.L. Golden of the M.E. Church officiated. The relatives attending the funeral from abroad were J.S. Ferguson of Council Bluffs; Elias Ferguson and wife, Amasa Ferguson, Hartington, NE; Mrs. Mattie Ferguson, Stanhope, IA.; Mrs. Betty Denny and son, Mandla; Mr. & Mrs. Clint Ross and Isaiah Denny, Audubon; Mr. & Mrs. Bert Denny and Mr. & Mrs. Fred Mike, of Gray; Dr. J.B. Gardner and daughter, Lorin Hockett and wife of Mandla, also a sister, Mrs. Gardner and her son Stuart and Mr. & Mrs. A.W. Dales of Harlan.
