Elizabeth Grau

Elizabeth Anne Grau went to our Lord on 29 October 2007. She was born in Hospers, Iowa on January 1, 1913. Her parents were Winant and Effie (nee Dyksterhuis) Vanderkamp. She had two sisters, Beatrice and Elta and a brother Melvin.

During World War II, she met Lester Albert Grau of Manning, Iowa. They were married on July 17, 1942, beginning Elizabeth's career as an Army Wife. In 1953, the family came to Fort Bliss, which was the start of a long relationship with El Paso and Zion Lutheran Church. Elizabeth was a gifted painter, an occasional school teacher and part of the El Paso art community for many years. Elizabeth's husband died on 12 July 1981. Elizabeth is survived by her sister Elta of Eugene, Oregon; her son Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Lester W. Grau of Leavenworth, Kansas; her son Alan K. Grau of Asheville, North Carolina; her grandson Chief Warrant Officer 3 James W. Grau, a helicopter pilot serving in Germany; and her grandson, Darshan Taylor, working in Japan. Viewing is from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Martin Funeral Home Central. The funeral service will be held at 10:15 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2007, at Zion Lutheran Church with interment following at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery. Elizabeth will be buried with her husband.
