Survived by Husband and Six Children

Mrs. Elvira Jane Hays passed away at her home in Manning, Wednesday evening, March 24, 1926, after a long and serene illness. She was born in Sterling, Illinois, on September 27, 1869, being at the time of her death, 56 years, 5 months, and 27 days old. She came to Carroll County with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.V. Swearingen, in 1878, when she was 9 years old, and has lived in the vicinity continuously ever since. On July 16, 1889, she was united in marriage to Mr. Harry C. Hays, who with six children survive her. They are Mrs. W. A. Bridwell, Providence, Kentucky; Dr. E. A. Hays, Lake City, Ia.; Mrs. H. J. White, Des Moines, Ia.; Mrs. H. F. Grelck, Mrs. Earl L. Barsby, and Miss Erma E. of Manning, Ia. One child Lyle M., aged 11 years, preceded her in death. Six grandchildren, three brothers, and four sisters, also survive her.
She united with the Presbyterian Church on March 26, 1916 and has been one of its most earnest workers and consistent members. Being a long time resident of the community, she will be greatly missed by her many friends who sincerely regret her death. She bore her suffering bravely and with a serene faith in her god, leaves a testimony for good that will always live in the memory of her family and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church, Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. E.E. Zimmerman officiating. Her body was laid to rest in the Manning Cemetery.


Elvira Hays is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
