Emil Karstens, Manning Farmer, Taken By Death

MANNING (THNS) - Emil Karstens, 64, Manning farmer, died about 5:15 this morning at the Manning General hospital, where he had been a patient since May 30. His death was caused by a heart attack.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ohde Funeral home. The Rev. Brown Garlock, minister of the Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery.

Mr. Karstens had farmed north of Manning continuously since his marriage. His son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Schroeder, lived there with him. His wife, Lena, died in 1921.

Surviving with his daughter, Mrs. Schroeder (Bernice), and grandson, Thomas Harold Schroeder, are one brother, Henry, and four sisters, Mrs. Walter Laurinat, Mrs. Herman Rowedder, Mrs. William Opperman and Mrs. Mary Vinke, all of Manning.

Four brothers preceded him in death, his twin, August, who died a few years ago, Hannes, Claus, and Peter.

SERVICES SATURDAY FOR EMIL KARSTEN, 64
Funeral services for Emil Karsten, 64, will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the Ohde Funeral home, with Rev. Brown Garlock of the Methodist church officiating. Mr. Karsten died at the Manning General hospital Wednesday morning of a heart ailment. He had been confined to the hospital for several weeks.

Mr. Karsten, who farmed near Manning until his illness, was born in December 1884. His wife, Lena, passed away in 1921.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Harold Schroeder, who lives near Manning; a grandson, Thomas Harold; a brother, Henry, and four sisters: Mrs. Walter Laurinat, Mrs. Herman Rowedder, Mrs. William Opperman, Mrs. Mary Vinke. Mr. Karsten was preceded in death by his wife, a twin brother, August, and three other brothers, Hannas, Claus, and Peter.

We take this means of thanking the doctors and nurses for the care given our father and grandfather during his stay in the Manning hospital. We extend our appreciation to the Rev. Brown Garlock for his consoling words and the choir for their hymns. We are especially thankful to those who assisted in any way, sent cards and flowers during our recent bereavement. Relatives attending final rites for Emil Karsten, 64, who was buried here Saturday afternoon included Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Plahn, Mrs. Emil Altwine and sons, Emil Miller, Ed Miller and daughter, Mrs. Mike Babek and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Altwine and Norma Jean, all of Pierce, Nebraska; Henry Pewe of Holstein, Herman Peters of Galva, Mr. and Mrs. William Plahn, Jr., and laughter of Norfolk. Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Ranniger and family, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Plahn, Arnold Plahn and Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred McDermott, all of Carroll; Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Laurinat of Spirit Lake, and Mrs. Ed Reikofski of Tilden, Nebraska.

The Rev. B.H. Garlock had charge of the services from Ohde Funeral home at 2 o'clock. Pallbearers were Herman Opperman, Fred Jensen, Fred Mundt, George Jackson, Hugo John R. Hansen and Freddie Ehlers. Complete obituary appeared last week.
