Emma Hass

Funeral services for Emma Hass were held Tuesday, March 3, 1998, 2:00 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church at Manning, Iowa. Officiating were Pastor Daniel Vogel and Pastor Curt Dwyer, Carlys Stribe was organist. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery with Darrell Eischeid, Eric Meislahn, George Newcomb, Larry Hagedorn, Jeff Faulkner, and Jack Faulkner as casket bearers.

Emma Friedarika, daughter of Carl and Sophie (Tobiason) Dethlefsen, was born August 24, 1904, at Leck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. She was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church at West Brodelum, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

When Emma was four years old, her mother died. She attended school in West Bordelum and at the age of eighteen came to the United States of America with her father and two sisters. They arrived at the port of New York City and went directly to Kenwood, Iowa, where they had relatives.

On December 5, 1923, Emma was united in marriage with William Hass in the Zion Lutheran Parsonage at Denison. They farmed in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa, where they raised their nine children: Caroline, Erma, Alice, Willis, Pearl, Norma Jean, Vernon, Mary Ann, and Robert. Emma was especially proud of becoming a United States citizen in 1942. Emma and William quit farming in 1957 because of William's poor health and moved to Manning. Her husband died on January 14, 1960.

After her husband's death, Emma moved to Carroll where she worked at various jobs for six years before moving to Ames, where she was the cook for Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. In 1977 she retired and returned to her home in Manning and the next year moved to Elm Crest Apartments.

Emma was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. She was active at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning and the Zion Ladies Aid.

In November of 1997 she became a resident of the Carroll Manor Nursing Home, Carroll, Iowa where she died on Friday, February 27, 1998, at the age of 93 years, 6 months, and 3 days.

Besides her husband and parents, Emma was preceded in death by three children: Vernon Hass; Erma Bock; and Norma Jean Wailes; two granddaughters, Jolene Hass and Kathy Bock, in infancy; one grandson, Michael Wegner, two sisters, Marie Steen and Sophie Bock; three sons-in-law: Alvin Hagedorn; Chris Meislahn; and Robert Wessling.

Emma is survived by six children: Caroline and her husband, Robert McFarland, of Yellville, AR; Alice Meislahn, of Denison; Willis Hass and his wife, Delores, of Fort Dodge; Pearl and her husband, Melvin Eischeid, of Carroll; Mary Ann Wessling, of Schleswig; and Robert Hass and his wife, Phyllis, of Phelan, California; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
