Emma J. Kooiman
Former Resident, Dies In California (June 1936)

It is with the deepest sorrow to residents of Manning to learn of the passing, in California, of Emma J. Kooiman, beloved wife of Joe Kooiman.

Emma J. Kooiman, nee Kusel, was born in Audubon County on March 3, 1890 and attended the rural schools. The family moved to Manning in 1906, where she spent the greater part of her early life. In later years she attended school in Mitchell, South Dakota.

In 1923, she with her sister Dora, established their residence in Los Angeles, California. On October 11, 1923 she was united in marriage to Joe Kooiman of Los Angeles, California. A double ceremony was performed at that time, also uniting her sister Dora to Arthur Kooiman, brother of Joe Kooiman.

She later became active in the Christian Science Church.

To her many friends of Manning and to the members of Salona Chapter 231 O. E. S. Manning, Iowa, of which she was a member, her passing will be deeply regretted.

She leaves her husband, a sister Dora, and her mother Mrs. Fred Bartels, to mourn her passing.

Beautiful services were held at Pierce Bros. mortuary of Los Angeles, California on Friday, June 26, with A. R. Killgore, Christian Science Reader officiating, followed by the officers of Acacia Chapter 210 E. S. of Los Angeles rendering final rites.

Interment was at Inglewood Cemetery, a beautiful place of rest adjoining the city of Los Angles.

The services were largely attended by the many friends and acquaintances of former Manning residents now residing in and near Los Angeles, San Diego, and Indio, California, who gathered to pay their last respects to the memory of this estimable woman. Many were the beautiful floral tributes.

Her father, Herman Kusel preceded her in death in 1905 and her brother William in 1918.
