Evelyn Bales

Funeral Service was held for Evelyn Bales Saturday, November 22, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Manning, Iowa. Pastor Mike Fitzsimmons of First Presbyterian Church in Carroll, Iowa, officiated. Connie Siepker was organist with Judy Joens and Marshall Brown as vocalists. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery in Manning, Iowa, with Kendall Spies, Kenny Klocke, Mike Lorenzen, Brent Spies, Randy Spies, and Tom Macklin. Honorary casketbearers were Orren Ramsey, Harold Olson, George Campbell, and Henry Sonksen.

Evelyn Belle, daughter of William and Isabelle (Shaw) Summerville, was born November 23, 1917, southeast of Manning, Iowa, on the family farm. She attended school in Gray and graduated from Gray Consolidated School in 1935. Evelyn then attended Hampton Beauty School in Des Moines and worked in Le Mars, Rippey, Perry, and Gray before buying a shop in Manning in 1940.

On November 1, 1945, Evelyn was united in marriage with Darrell Bales at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning. They made their home in Manning where Darrell owned and operated a grocery store. In 1955 they moved to Manilla and Evelyn continued her work as a hairstylist. Evelyn retired in 1980 and in 1981 they moved to Carroll. Darrel died March 2, 1985. Evelyn was able to live on her own until she became a resident of Carroll Health Center in 1998.

Evelyn was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Carroll. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed quilting, going to movies and recording her daily activities.

On November 20, 2003, Evelyn died at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was 85 years, 11 months and 28 days of age.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a stepson Jack Bales, sister Margaret and husband Alfred Spies, infant sister Ruth, and great-nephews Jeffrey Schaeffer and Rick Spies.

She is survived by her brother David Summerville of Vista, California; nieces and nephews: Sheri and husband Steven Schaeffer of Rancho Bernardo, California; Scott Summerville of Lake San Marcos, California; Russell Spies and wife Mildred of Audubon; Donna and husband Dick Zerwas of Commerce Township, Michigan; Stan Spies and wife Jolene of Manilla; Ken Spies and wife Geri of Manning; a stepdaughter-in-law Julie Bales, other relatives and friends.
