EVELYN E. BORKOWSKI

Evelyn, daughter of Earl and Mabel Crouch Weems, was born January 24, 1923, near Botna, Iowa. She spent her entire childhood on the farm on which she was born and attended Jefferson Township No. 6 School through the eighth grade. Evelyn graduated from Irwin High School in 1941.

On June 8, 1942, she was united in marriage with Harold "Jack" Borkowski. She spent the next 3 1/2 years with her parents while her husband served his country during World War II. He returned home on January 9, 1946, and they spent the next 27 years farming east of Botna. In 1973 they moved to Manning. Evelyn had been employed by L.R. Nelson Corp. for over 15 years. She continued working until her health no longer permitted her to work.

Evelyn had been a member of the United Methodist Church since 1950, and had taught Sunday School for 15 years and had also served as Sunday School Superintendent. She taught Bible School many years and served as its superintendent for a time. She was a member of United Methodist Women and Mary Circle, serving as an officer in those groups. Evelyn was an active member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary for 25 years, and had held many offices. She was a 4-H leader for seven years.

Her biggest enjoyments in life were spending time with her family and her grandchildren.

Evelyn had been in failing health recently and died Sunday, October 17, 1982, at Manning General Hospital, at the age of 59 years, 8 months, and 23 days. She was preceded in death by her father.

She is survived by her husband Harold "Jack" and seven children: Jackie (Linda), Iowa Falls, Karen (Mrs. Kenneth) Stueve, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Gwenda (Mrs. Joel) Basham, Exria, Marla (Mrs. Stephen) Williams, Independence, Kansas, Kenneth, Omaha, Nebraska, Juanette (Mrs. Frank) Birk, Gridley, Kansas and Laurel Borkowski of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren, her mother, Mabel Weems, Manning, one brother, Eldis "Bud" Weems, Manning, four sisters, Leona Hemminger, Elk Horn, Lois Wegner, Manning, Opal Christensen, Humbolt and LaRae Heller Missouri Valley.

Funeral services for Mrs. Borkowski were held Tuesday, October 19, 1982, 2 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home, Manning, Iowa, with Reverend John Cornish of the Methodist Church Officiating. Psalm and prayer were by Pastor Louis Miller of Calvary Baptist Church. Bonita Hagedorn was organist, and Judy Joens was vocalist. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery with Merle Borkowski, Laverne Borkowski, Gregg Borkowski, Darrell Weems, Terry Christensen, and Doug Weems as casketbearers.
