Orval Ralph Fink, prominent Manning professional business man with over forty years of service to the Manning community died February 14, 1988 at Manning General Hospital after a prolonged illness.

He reached the age of 75 years.

Funeral services were held Thursday, February 18, 1988 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning with Reverend Ralph Reinhart, and Orval's nephew Reverend Laurence Burns of Templeton officiating the service. Don Zubrod was lector for the Mass.

Orval was converted to the Catholic religion in 1937.

Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Manning with Frank Willis, Francis Zerwas, Arthur Rix, Eddie Fischer, Claus Bunz and Greg Hanson as casketbearers.

Rosaries were held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.

Orval Fink was born at Lorimor, Iowa December 19, 1912, the son of William Henry and Beulah Myers Fink. In 1923 at the age of eleven he moved to Manning with his parents. After graduating from the Manning High School he obtained a degree in pharmaceutical chemistry from Drake University in Des Moines. June 6, 1938 Orval married Vera Molloy at Ayrshire, Iowa.

He returned to Manning in 1946, and purchased part interest with Art Rix in the Lewis-Reinhold company. He obtained full ownership in 1972, and sold the store to Tom Crabb in 1977. Although Fink retired from the store he continued to work as a relief pharmacist for other drug stores until his health failed.

Fink was a member of the Northwest Pharmaceutical Association and served as president for a number of years.

Involvement in the community began in 1947 when Fink was elected as president of the chamber of commerce and remained an active member until selling his business.

Fink was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Manning Municipal light plant in 1959 serving as chairman from 1962 until his retirement in 1985. During his tenure he played a major role in formation of the Western Iowa Municipal Electric Cooperative Association (WIMECA) serving as its chairman for' 11 years. Fink also served as board member of North Western Power Cooperative.

As a member of the Manning Community Hospital Association for nearly 40 years Fink had been involved in many projects. The Manning Plaza Corporation was formed in 1965 with Fink as its first president. He also served as the hospital pharmacist and president of the hospital board of, directors for many years. In August 1987 the hospital dedicated the Orval Fink wing.

He has been involved in numerous other organizations and activities which include; past president of the Rotary Club, Community Chest and Foreign Student exchange coordinator, chairman of the Tri-Valley Health Planning district, cable board of directors, member of the board of the Manning Trust and Savings Bank, Holstein-Friesion Museum board, Carroll County Conservation Board, and Iowa State Extension Service for community development. He served on the Manning Diamond Jubilee board, the Manning Centennial board and the Manning History Book Committee.

Orval Fink was a man of many interests. He enjoyed photography, hunting, fishing, and ice boating. He built his own ice boats at his parents' cottage at Black Hawk Lake.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling to all parts of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii and many countries in Europe.

Besides his wife, Vera, he is survived by four children: Raymond and wife, Laura, of Dallas, Texas; Jeanette and husband, Clet Winker, of Glidden, Iowa; Dorothy and husband, William Colbenson, of Littleton, Colorado; and Jim and wife, Mary, of Naperville, Illinois; one sister Edith and her husband, Arthur Mitchell, of Alexandria, Virginia, and 14 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Ethelyn, Mrs. Lyle Chase, and his parents, Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Fink.

 


Orval Fink is buried in the Manning Catholic Cemetery.
