George Frederick Ferdinand Fischer

George, son of Henry and Anna (Jansen) Fischer, was born May 27, 1910, on a farm south of Manning in Audubon County, Iowa. On June 26, 1910, he was baptized at home and on May 17, 1925, he was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He attended country school near Manning, completing the eighth grade. While working on the farm, George repaired machinery and maintained roads. From 1933-1934 he went into the automobile repair business with Bill Miller. In 1934 he became employed with Manning Motor Company.

On June 16, 1935, George was united in marriage to Hilda Theresa Hansen at Manning. Two sons were born to this union: Larry and Douglas. In 1963 George and his brother, Eddie, purchased Manning Motor Company and ran the business until the late 1980's. Hilda died May 12, 1977. In 1984 George was recognized for 50 years of service with Chevrolet.

On May 17, 1985, George was united in marriage to Verna Musfeldt at Zion Lutheran Church.

On August 19, 1997, George died unexpectedly at Manning General Hospital. He reached the age of 87 years, 2 months, and 23 days.

George was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Laymen's League. He was on the City Planning Commission during the 1960's. His lifelong love was to make music. He played the flute, saxophone, and clarinet in a variety of bands and orchestras including The Jolly Home Brewers, Ohde's Band, and Pete Kuhl's Orchestra. He was a long time member of the American Federation of Musicians.

Besides his parents and first wife, George was preceded in death by a sister, Lucy Schelldorf.

He is survived by his wife, Verna Fischer, of Manning; two sons: Larry Fischer and his wife, Marian, of Waseca, MN, and Douglas Fischer, of Kansas City, MO; two grandsons: Andrew and Alan; four stepsons: Lee Musfeldt and his wife, Beverly, of Long View, TX; Ralph Musfeldt and his wife, Betty, of Boulder, CO; Dale Musfeldt and his wife, Georgia, of Highlands Ranch, CO; Roger Musfeldt and his wife, Jo Ann, of Omaha, NE; ten step-grandchildren; one brother, Eddie Fischer and his wife, Vera, of Manning; an uncle, Herman Fischer, of Manning; one nephew, Art Schelldorf, of McKinney, TX; other relatives and many friends.
