THE FAMILY WISHES TO EXPRESS THEIR GRATITUDE FOR YOUR KINDNESS EVIDENCED IN THOUGHT, WORD, AND DEED, AND INVITES YOU TO JOIN THEM FOR LUNCH AND FELLOWSHIP AT THE CHURCH FOLLOWING THE COMMITTAL SERVICE.

On the wings of an eagle,
To heaven I will fly,
To a tree top so high.
So follow me there,
I will see you in heaven
So don’t go elsewhere.
I’ll see you in heaven
And we can share
Sheer oblivion,
and peace compare.
On the wings of an eagle
To heaven I will fly,
Please follow me there
We will be together… Bye & Bye

Florence Hattie Irene, daughter of Max and Anna (Lamaack) Steckelberg, was born March 4, 1921, on a farm in Crawford County, Iowa. At the age of 5 she was baptized and later confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Florence attended country school, East Boyer Township No. 5, and then graduated from Manilla High School in 1939. She received additional training as a nurse’s assistant and a child development worker.

On September 25, 1940, Florence was united in marriage with Marvin William Hass by Trinity Lutheran Minister Reverend Israel. Six children were born to this union. They farmed mostly in the Botna area then moved to Manning in 1953. Marvin died in an auto accident on November 25, 1954.

Florence later, on June 1, 1974, was united in marriage with Walter F. Lapel, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning by Reverend Edward F. Heinicke.

Florence worked at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home shortly after it opened. After seven years there she then worked at Woodward State Home for three years. She retired on August 26, 1980, and she and Walter continued to live in Manning. Walter died on February 5, 1997.

Florence was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards, watching TV, and visiting with family and friends. She did a lot of volunteer work at the Senior Citizen Center, Plaza Nursing Home, and Elderbridge Agency.

Florence died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 14, 2003, at home in Manning, Iowa. She was 81 years, 10 months and 10 days of age.

Besides her husbands, Florence was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sisters: Henry Steckelberg, George Steckelberg, Annie Miller, Ida Hilbert, Charles Steckelberg, Minnie Bandow, Max Steckelberg Jr., Frank Steckelberg, and Walter Steckelberg; grandson Kent Koon; and two great-grandchildren Joshua Kasperbauer and Jordan Thies.

Florence is survived by six children: Keith Hass and his wife Sandra of Manning; Kenneth Hass and wife Jolene of Loveland, CO; Kathryn Cooper of New Zealand; Kay and her husband Robert Subbert of Panora; Kevin Hass of Glenwood; and Kurt Hass of Griswold; three step-children: Roger Lapel and his wife Theresa of Bloomington, MN; Larry Lapel and his wife Donna of Council Bluffs; Beverly and her husband Richard Curlee of Omaha, NE; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother John Steckelberg and his wife Leita of Denison; in-laws Selma Carter of Manilla; Helen and husband Raymond Schuldt of Denison; Earl Schmidt of Schleswig; Vernetta Hass of Denison; Lester Hass and wife Viola of Harlan and Merlin Hass and wife Verna of Manning; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
