FRED BENNETT, PARK RESIDENT, DIES THURSDAY

Funeral services for Fred A. Bennett, 81, were held in the Calvary Methodist Church at Arnolds Park Sunday afternoon and burial took place in the family lot at Manning later in the afternoon. Mr. Bennett died at the Spirit Lake Hospital Thanksgiving night, November 27, 1947.

He and his family had lived in Arnolds Park since 1929 and he had been active in community affairs. He became ill several weeks ago and was taken to the Spirit Lake hospital for treatment. He improved and submitted to surgery, after which he was as able to return home. He was re-admitted a week before his death.

Mr. Bennett was born near Milford, Massachusetts, March 3, 1866, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert A. Bennett. His parents came to Carroll County, Iowa, when he was a child. In 1882 he entered the University of Iowa law school from which he was graduated in 1887. He set up a law practice and became interested in banking. Before he was appointed a state bank examiner at the age of 28, he had practiced law and been cashier of the bank at Manning and president of the bank at Irwin. He was a state bank examiner eight years.

In 1899 he moved his family to Sioux City, where he became president of the People's Savings bank and later of a mortgage and loan business. In 1929 the family moved to Arnolds Park.

He was married August 1, 1892, to Miss Claire Branson, daughter of a pioneer Carroll County family. They became the parents of two sons, Walter W. now of Los Angeles, California, and Robert W. who lives at home. They, and Mrs. Bennett, survive.

Mr. Bennett was affiliated with the I.O.O.F. Lodge and was at one time master of the exchequer of the Iowa Grand Lodge, Knights of Pythias. He had also served on the Sioux City Council. He was a Republican precinct committeeman in Arnolds Park and was a member of the Okoboji Lakes Commercial Club. He had been a director for many years and also served as president of that organization.

The Rev. C.K. Hudson, pastor of the Calvary Methodist Church conducted the services at Arnolds Park and accompanied the family to Manning for the burial rites.


Fred Bennett is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
