Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Manning Lutheran Church for Fred Gruhn, 81, who died Monday at his home here after a year's illness. The Rev. J.M. Ansorge conducted rites, with burial in Manning Cemetery. A retired farmer, Mr. Gruhn was born in Germany, came to this country in 1892. He farmed south of Manning until 1907, then moved to Shelby County, where he farmed for 37 years. He retired five years ago and moved to Manning. He married Amanda Asmus on March 23, 1895. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1945. Surviving are his widow and two sons, Henry who lives on the home farm, and Ed Gruhn, living near Botna; seven daughters, Mrs. Albert Jansen, Dallas, South Dakota, Mrs. Grover Steen, Manning, Mrs. Louie Thompsen, Harlan, Mrs. Henry Langbehn, Woolsey, South Dakota, Mrs. Albert Mahnke, Albert City, Mrs. Gilmer Anthony, Manning, and Mrs. Lenus Anderson, Westside; 27 grandchildren, three great grandchildren; a step-sister, Mrs. Hans Greibel, Madison, South Dakota, and a sister, Mrs. August Braun, Manning.


Fred Gruhn

Fred Gruhn, 80, long-time resident of Manning and community, passed away at his home here Monday and is being buried from Zion Lutheran Church this Thursday afternoon with Pastor John M. Ansorge in charge. Burial is in the local cemetery.

Mr. Gruhn was born April 8, 1867, in Waltersdorf, Germany, where he lived until he was 25. He came to this country in 1892, youngest of a family of six boys and two girls. At the age of 12 he began to support himself and continued diligent work after coming to this country.

On March 23, 1895, he was united in marriage with Amanda Asmus and the couple lived on a farm 2 1/2 miles south of Manning. In 1907, they moved to a farm in Shelby County where they lived for 37 years. Four and a half years ago they retired and moved to Manning where they have since resided. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary March 23, 1945.

Besides Mrs. Gruhn, survivors include nine children, Henry on the home farm; Ed of near Botna; Mrs. Albert and Lena Jansen of Dallas, South Dakota; Mrs. Grover (Ella) Steen of Botna; Mrs. Louie (Alma) Thomsen of Harlan; Mrs. Henry (Frieda) Langbehn of Woolsey, South Dakota; Mrs. Albert (Anna) Mahnke of Albert City; Mrs. Gilmer (Ida) Anthony of Manning; and Mrs. Lenus (Helen) Anderson of Westside. There are also 37 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a step-sister, Mrs. Hans Griebe of Madison, South Dakota, and a sister, Mrs. August (Henrietta) Braun of Manning.

Pallbearers were Henry Ewoldt, George Dammann, Ray Witt, John Barten, Ed Steen, and William Wiese.


Fred Gruhn is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
