Manning Pioneer Laid To Rest Monday

On the afternoon of Friday, July 10, 1931, when the sun was sinking in the west, and nature drawing a curtain for the day as a reminder for we mortals to rest, a curtain was slowly and calmly drawn over the life of one of our most highly respected and esteemed citizens. A useful life terminated with his demise and a weary wanderer has gone to his reward. And this community is mourning the loss of a loyal citizen, a true friend and neighbor and the family is bereaved over the departure of a true and loving husband and father.

Fred Kuhn was born February 9th, 1852, in Hagenau, East Prussia, Germany. Here he spent his boyhood days, received his education, and of sturdy build and strong, he made a magnificent soldier, serving in the 7 Company, Kaiser Alexander G. Grenadier Regiment No. 1, stationed in Berlin, from 1872 to 1875. After his honorable discharge he returned to his home town taking up his former vocation. In 1878 he was united in marriage to Miss Paulina Tessmann, to which union 14 children were born, of which five passed away in infancy. Those surviving and mourning the death of the father besides the bereaved wife and mother are: Four sons, namely, Fred Kuhn of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Emil Kuhn of Manning; Ernest Kuhn of Manning; Frank Kuhn of Denison, Ia.; Five daughters, namely, Mrs. Mary Pike of Shelby, Iowa; Mrs. Emma Wycoff of Botna, Iowa; Miss Minnie Kuhn of Manning, Iowa; Mrs. Clara Hall of Scranton, Iowa; and Mrs. Elsie Hoffmann of Walnut, Ia. He also leaves 24 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday of afternoon, July 13th, with services from the Lutheran church, Reverend J. M. Ansorge, pastor of the church officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Manning cemetery. Pallbearers were: Fred David, Guss Ress, Chris Hollander, Wm. Martens, Henry Rohr, John Sonksen.


Fred Kuhn is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
