Fritz Hammer Passes Away Last Wednesday
Funeral Services Held Saturday at St. Mark's
Fritz Hammer, 88, resident of the community nearly fifty years, passed away here Wednesday of last week at 4:05 p. m. He had suffered a light stroke shortly before, but it was thought not to be of too serious a nature.

Funeral services for Mr. Hammer were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 from the Anderson Funeral Home and at 2:00 p.m. from St. Mark's Lutheran Church.

Rev. H.O. Rhode was in charge of the last rites and burial was in the Bloomfield Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Arthur Prosch, Everett Nielsen, Herman Bruhn, William Koertje, Charles Petersen, and Victor Clausen.

Fritz Hammer was born October 5, 1859, at Pankens Gut near Mewshusen in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Here he was received by Baptism in the Lutheran Church, with public school education and religious instruction ending with confirmation. In 1879 he came to America, settling in Clinton County, Iowa, where in 1886 he led to the altar of marriage his bride, Miss Emma Neve of Toronto, Iowa.

In 1890, he moved with his family to Crawford County, Iowa, where they farmed a few years. In 1902 they settled here in Knox County, four and a half miles northwest of Bloomfield, Nebraska. His retirement from active farming came in 1914 when he moved with his wife to Bloomfield.

On June 8, 1931, his wife was called by death from his side, after 45 years of happy married life.

Since the day of his wife's passing, he lived at first by himself, and later on, as age was coming and beginning to be a handicap he lived with his children periodically.

The departed was of good and robust health the major part of his life, and when the end came it was to a certain extent unexpected. He passed away July 7, 1948, at 4:05 p.m., at an age of 88 years, 9 months, and 2 days and leaves to mourn his departure the following children: Annie (Mrs. E. Brasch), Franz Hammer, Fred Hammer, Leona (Mrs. R. Wegner), Rumilda (Mrs. P. Maas), Sioux City Iowa, Mamie (Mrs. C. Schwartz), and Henry Hammer.

Two children preceded him in death, Clara in infancy, and Pauline, the wife of Henry Petersen.

There are also surviving 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hammer became a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church on February 10, 1910, thus St. Mark's loses a member, the community a good citizen and his former neighbors and associates a valuable friend.
Memorial wreaths in his name were left to worthy causes to the amount of $123.
The relatives from out-of-town attending the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. William Hammer, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schroeder, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gehlsen, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Hammer, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Hammer, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hammer, Herman Hammer, and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mengenhausen and son of Flandreau, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Peterson of Iroquois, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Tangeman and sons of Laurel, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Larson and daughter of Magnet, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Maas of Sioux City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. C.R.
