Genevieve Marie, daughter of Boniface John and Bernadine Marie (Mersman) Kasperbauer, was born January 10, 1920, at home on a farm east of Dedham. When she was a young child Genevieve moved with her family to a farm east of Manning. She attended rural school east of Manning in Ewoldt Township. Her mother died when Genevieve was thirteen years old so, as the oldest daughter, she quit school to stay home and help raise her brothers and sisters.

At one of the dances held in Templeton, Genevieve met Henry John Handlos. They were united in marriage on October 10, 1939, at Sacred Heart Church in Manning. The ceremony took place at 6:00 AM so Henry could go home and pick corn. They farmed and raised their family of three children east of Manning, near Manilla and then in Audubon County. In 1984 they retired and moved into Manning.

Genevieve was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning. She worked hard on the farm with her husband gardening, canning and raising chickens. She enjoyed dancing, driving, walking and, above all, her family.

Shortly after the death of her husband on April 20, 2002, she went to live with her daughter Marian and family in rural Hancock. During those years they enjoyed traveling and Genevieve especially enjoyed helping care for her great grandchildren. When her health began to fail she became a resident of Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in December of 2009. She died there on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at the age of 91 years, 7 months and 15 days.

Preceding Genevieve in death are her parents; husband Henry Handlos; grandson Robert Handlos; four brothers Francis Kasperbauer as an infant; Don Kasperbauer; Jerome Kasperbauer and Raymond Kasperbauer; sister Bonita and husband John Kahler and brother in law Orville Kerkhoff.

She is survived by her three children: Marilyn and husband Val Meyer of Beatrice, Nebraska; Gerald Handlos and wife Janet of Georgetown, Texas, and Marian and husband Chuck Lumpkin of Hancock; 7 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sister Dorothy Kerkhoff of Audubon; sisters in law Margaret Kasperbauer of Manning and Marie O’Gorman of Greeley, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
