Virgil Genzen
Virgil Johann, son of Albert and Bertha Grimm Genzen, was born January 21, 1913, at Haverhill in Marshall County, Iowa. In 1916 the family moved to a farm near Manning. Virgil attended rural schools and graduated with the Manning High School Class of 1930.
On October 16, 1935, Virgil was united in marriage with Florence Elfrieda Hinz at Zion Lutheran Church in Clarinda. Two children were born to this union. Virgil and Florence farmed northeast of Manning until the fall of 1983 when they retired and moved into town. During his retirement Virgil liked to help on the farm, bowl, play cards, and visit with friends. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Virgil was able to remain in their home until October of 1998, when he became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning. He died there Monday, February 4, 2002, at the age of 89 years and 14 days.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Elmer Genzen, Arthur Genzen, Lester Genzen and wife Irene, Ivan Genzen and Robert Genzen; and a brother-in-law Delbert Vinke.
He is survived by his wife Florence Genzen of Manning; two children Larry Genzen and wife Cynthia and Darlene and husband Dale Vollstedt. all of Manning; nine grandchildren: Janet Smith, Paula Wulf. Robert Genzen and wife Irene, Barbara Grove and husband Dan, Judith Jacobsen and husband Mike, Keith Vollstedt and wife Jaclyn, Karen Kienast and husband Bary, Kathy Vollstedt, and Kent Vollstedt and wife Karen; 28 great grandchildren: Sara Grage; Jeremy and Ashley Wulf, Jennifer, Stephanie, Samantha and Christopher Smith; Bart, Lacey and Paige Hinners; Zachary Grove; Taya, Allaetra, Mikasia and Neeka Jacobsen; Rebecca Genzen; Matthew and Michael Alexander; Annah Vollstedt; Anna, Michael and Rachael Prince; Stacie and Brooke Kienast; Elizabeth, Adam, Katie and Gina Vollstedt; two great great granddaughters Lillian Kae Genzen and Mya Ann HaubrichAlexander; three sisters: Odessa Vinke. LaVonne and husband Louie Gehlsen. and Lucille and husband Kenneth Pfannkuch, all of Manning; sisters-in-law: Irene Genzen of Manilla and Donna Genzen of Bloomington, Illinois; and other relatives and friends.
