Gordell Vernon, son of Wilbur and Phyllis (Pieper) Lamp, was born May 11, 1943, at the Loren Hockett Farm in Manning, Iowa. On October 3, 1943, he was baptized by Reverend C.W. Schmidt at the Lutheran Church in Denison. Gordell grew up near Manning and attended White Bear #7 Country School in Ewoldt Township until the seventh grade. He then attended junior high and high school in Manning, graduating in 1961. Gordell then worked for several area farmers.

On September 14, 1963, Gordell was united in marriage with Valda Lamaack at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Four children: Julie, Jill and twins Scott and Steven were born to this union. Since 1969, Gordell and Valda lived and farmed northwest of Aspinwall. He was also employed at Farmland from 1964 to 1972 and with the Aspinwall Coop from 1995 to 2005.

A Man Who Loves The Soil

I think a man who loves the soil,
Who bends above the fertile earth,
And plants the seed with calloused hands
Must be a gentleman of worth.
A man who cherished the sod
Must surely be a friend of God!

I think a man who loves the soil;
Who nurtures every growing thing,
And watches with expectancy
For nature's fruitful harvesting,
Who oft has plowed the lands he's trod,
Must be a partner of God.

I think a man who loves the soil
Finds happiness in rich supply;
Though toil he must to earn his bread
He reaps much more than wheat and rye,
For with each little grain or pod
He cultivates a faith in God.
