Grace Edna, daughter of Norman and Viola (Dowd) Goodwin, was born June 1, 1905, north of Waverly, Iowa. She grew up near the county line of Bremer County south of Nashua, Iowa, where she attended country school. After completing her schooling, she helped her father on the farm and worked as a housekeeper. In March of 1925 she moved to the Defiance area where she worked as a housekeeper in the home of her long time pen pal Orville Carter to care for his mother.

On June 23, 1925, Grace was united in marriage with Orville Carter at Harlan. Four children were born to this union. The family lived on a farm south of Defiance until 1940 when they moved to a farm five miles south of Manning. They retired in 1961 and moved into Manning to the home on Fourth Street they had purchased several years before. Orville died in January of 1980 and Grace continued to live in their home with the support of her children and grandchildren.

Grace enjoyed gardening and sharing whatever she had with others. She was fond of polka and country music. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and thoroughly enjoyed reciting and sharing Holy Bible passages with others.

Grace fell in her home in February of 2004 after which her health began to deteriorate. Later she entered the Manning Regional Healthcare Center where she died Friday, June 18, 2004, at the age of 99 years and 17 days.
