Former Postmaster Buried Here Monday

Gus E. Holmberg, son of John L. and Helena Holmberg, was born February 2, 1881, at Chariton. He was baptized in the Swedish Lutheran Church in his childhood. He received his education in the Chariton Public Schools. He was united in marriage to Bertha Claussen on December 5, 1906, at Manning. To this union a daughter, Odessa, was born.

Mr. Holmberg spent 18 years as a railway postal clerk, was postmaster at Manning for 12 years, after which he engaged in the restaurant business at Manning, Des Moines, and Boone. He was Past Master of Manual Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Manning, and Past Patron of Salona Chapter Order of Eastern Star.

For the last few years he made his home at Winona, Missouri. He passed away suddenly from a heart attack on December 31, 1953, at Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 29 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Gene, and a sister, Mrs. Emma Petersen.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha; his daughter, Mrs. Odessa Wycoff; three grandchildren, Bob, Rae Lynne, and Gene Wycoff, of Manning; also five sisters, Mrs. Minnie Hansen, Mrs. Grace Miller, Mrs. Bessie Pinnick, Mrs. Theodore Clark, Mrs. Cecil Mason, and one brother, Gene Holmberg, besides several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mason attended the rites.

Funeral services were held from the Ohde Funeral home Monday afternoon with the Rev. F.E. Hamlin of the Presbyterian Church in charge. Interment was in the Manning cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr. Virgel R. Anderson, W.C. Schrum, Robert Campbell, Henry Hoffmann, Fred Petersen, and Gus Jensen. Graveside services were in charge of Manual Lodge 450, A.F. & A.M. of Manning.

Music for the services was furnished by Mrs. Nick C. Schrum, Mrs. Albert Dietz, Arthur Rix and Ray Pratt. Mrs. Bonita Hagedorn accompanied.


Gus Holmberg is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
